Lefty Kreh – Fishing Legend
If you are a fly fisher living anywhere in the world, you have probably heard of Lefty Kreh
From his humble beginnings in Frederick, he became a world-famous outdoorsman
Placing a sculpture in his hometown, and continuing with Lefty’s tradition to promote a love and appreciation of the outdoors through fly fishing, are fitting ways to honor his contributions
Bernard Victor Kreh was born in Frederick in 1925 where his family lived on North Bentz Street
His father died when he was eight; as the eldest of three siblings Lefty assumed the daunting responsibility of supporting his family
Lefty fished, hunted, and trapped on the Monocacy River to help feed and support his family
Caught catfish using mussels found in the Monocacy for bait, selling the fish to a business on East street
Sold muskrat furs and hunted squirrels and ducks for table fare
He graduated from Frederick High School, and was recognized in 2018 as a Frederick High School Distinguished Alumni
