Advanced Fly Tying - Barr’s Net Builder Caddis
by Larry Forte
I will be tying John Barr’s Net Builder Caddis fly pattern at our next advanced fly tying gathering, on October 15th, at 7 p.m.
John Barr, who also developed the Copper John in 1993, developed the Net Builder Caddis pattern after finding rainbow trout full of green caddis larva on the Roaring Fork River in the 1980s, leading him to design a fly to imitate the free-living, net-building caddis larva that trout key on. The resulting highly realistic nymph became a best-selling pattern due to its segmented body, buggy appearance with dubbing and ribbing, and a tuft of material for a tail, effectively imitating the caddis larva responsible for the fishing success.
If we have time, we will tie another caddis fly, called the 60 Second Caddis Larva.
