Beginner Fly Tying - Pheasant Tail Variations

By Don Fine

As I’ve stated in previous issues of Streamlines, the goal of our PVFF beginner fly tying program is to learn to tie new fly patterns and to represent these imitations of natural fish foods in various stages of their lifecycle. The approach of modern fly tying is no longer stoic (i.e., duplicative), but rather is creative in nature. The ability of those tyers to vary or modify their tying approach can be a very rewarding experience, whether one intends to tie flies for use in fishing or simply as a rewarding pastime of creating a representation of a natural life form.

Our next PVFF beginner fly tying class will be held on October 21st, with our class tying both a conventional Pheasant Tail (PT) Nymph and a PT Soft Hackle “wet” fly. Join our class at 7 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, West Patrick Street, Frederick, in room 207.

Whether you are a member of PVFF or not, we welcome you to join us that evening. PVFF supplies all materials for our beginner fly tying classes, and we have tying vises and tools available for those who are just getting into the joys and rewards of tying artificial flies.

Please contact Don Fine if you plan to attend. Knowing how many participants will be attending ensures that we have ample amounts of tying materials for each class.
